Primary 5B Term 1

It was great to welcome Primary 5 back to school and it has already been an excellent start to the new session. The children seem refreshed from their holidays, very smart in their uniform and raring to go!

Since returning in August, the class have been building their learning community by developing their own class charters and getting to know each other through circle time activities. This has helped to create a supportive learning environment in which the children feel comfortable, valued and ensure success in their learning.

We had a visit from the Scottish SPCA on the 13th of September. The class chose the ‘Animal 999 Scotland’ workshop and it was a great introduction to The SPCA’s work in the community and beyond. Children were supplied with pictures of typical litter items which cause harm to animals, and had to assess them in relation to the risk they may present. This was a great activity for teamwork and debate. They also observed video clips of animals in care and learned facts about animals such as diet and habitats.

As part of the Modern Languages week the class are very much looking forward to meeting up with some of our cluster schools on Wednesday 28th of September in Newmains Primary for a modern languages games afternoon. The class have made sock puppets for this event to facilitate language conversation.

In our science topic we gained knowledge about the water cycle and how the whole process works. We carried out a scientific experiment on evaporation. The class had to try and predict what the results of the experiment would be.

We have been very busy working on our Social Studies topic “Britain”.  We created a learning plan where we had the chance to plan what we would like to learn about and how we would like to learn.  We started with learning about what countries make up Britain had to identify them on a map and locate their capitalcities.

It was encouraging to see parents at the recent Open Doors event as it was a good opportunity to meet with Mr Usher and share information about the routines and expectations of the year, homework procedures and for the children to share their learning within the classroom setting.
